In an increasingly consumerist society, the power of advertising is reflected in the high sales of popular consumer goods. Some argue that these products do not meet our real needs. This essay will discuss this argument, and offer my own thoughts on the topic.

New vocabulary:

Consumerist  adj. 消费主义的

There is no doubt that the acquisition of material goods has increased exponentially since the arrival of television into the family home. With this new technology, advertisers could endorse and sell their products directly to consumers, especially as television became a quotidian and normal part of life. In doing so, products that were previously seen as luxury items became necessities. Furthermore, advertising through TV, radio, magazines and newspapers created a desire for more and more. Today, social media is employed to advertise directly to users: businesses pay to advertise on Facebook, Instagram and the like, meaning greater access to people than ever before. Algorithms are used to target people specifically and precisely, selling wares that particular users are more likely to want.

In my opinion, today’s materialistic society is a direct reflection of the power of advertising. Society’s real needs are economic parity, environmental protection, and racial equality, among many others. However, people have become progressively absorbed into a neoliberal, consumer culture, and instead focus on the possession and procurement of goods that add no value to their lives. By doing so, individuals lose sight of what is truly important. The ability to shop and purchase while at home has exacerbated this issue even further.

该题目为8分范文。

首先,在作文中,笔者采用的是一边倒的结构而不是很多“烤鸭”喜欢采取的传统型让步+转折。这样的结构观点相对直接,逻辑也会比较完整,虽然第一段没有明确讲出同意或者不同意的具体看法,但从第二段第三段来看,就已经很明确的表现出了对于题目观点的认同。此外,从观点素材来说,这篇作文也并没有完全拘泥于对于广告本身的讨论,也加入了相关的多媒体和社会经济方面的素材,这些词汇资源也可供大家在其他相关话题的题目中进行参考和使用。
