When you learn a foreign language, all four skills (listening, reading, speaking, writing) are equally important. To what extent do you agree or disagree？
In today’s globalised society（全球化的社会）, knowledge of a foreign language is a highly sought after skill. It is argued that the four components （部分）– listening, reading, speaking and writing – are equally important. This essay will discuss this, and offer my own thoughts on the argument.
Most people learn a language in order to speak it, whether for work or for pleasure. After all, languages were originally only spoken: created as a way to communicate with others, just as they are now. To converse effectively, one also needs to be able to listen. Furthermore, an individual will find it easier to travel, with more opportunities than a person who can solely read or write. Conversely（相对的）, the ability to read and write another language is not to be underestimated. Especially important in business, reading and writing enables conversation through other mediums, where talking may not be possible. The ability to comprehend the written language also gives a person a richer and more comprehensive （全方面的）understanding.
In my opinion, all of these components of learning a language are equally important, however some may take precedence（优先）, depending on an individual’s reason for acquiring another language. As mentioned, the ability to speak another language will make travel easier and more accessible, as will the skill of listening. Reading and writing will enable an employee to connect with many of their co-workers all over the world. Moreover, for an immigrant（移民）, the ability to speak, listen, read and write in the language of their new country will ensure a smoother and simpler transition.
All four skills are equally as important, but depending on the circumstances（情况）, one or two skills may be more important. Thus, it is beneficial to be fluent（流利） in all four components, with the facility to use each one when it is required.
I started with brainstorming on why people might choose to learn another language – work, travel, pleasure- and then what components of the language would be most important for each. I also did some Google searches to get expert opinions on the topic – using language websites, YouTube videos and journal articles. I decided to focus on the benefits of each skill in the first paragraph and then discuss my opinion in the second paragraph.
Firstly, why speaking a language is important and how it benefits people when travelling. I also used this to connect to listening, as speaking to someone necessarily requires the ability to listen as well. Secondly, why reading and writing are important and how they benefit people, especially in business.
Firstly, I offered my opinion- that each is important, but one may be more important than the others depending on the circumstances or reason.
Secondly, how one skill like speaking is important for travellers; why writing is important for employees; and why all four skills are equally important for immigrants.
