Across the globe, life expectancy (预期寿命)has increased. However, this increase not only has implications for those aging individuals, but also for society as a whole. This essay will discuss some of these possible effects.

Individually, though there are obvious(明显的) advantages to living longer – more time with family, greater career options – an aging population (老龄化人口)also means those individuals will necessarily suffer from more sickness and disease. Longer life expectancy does not necessarily mean a greater quality of life(高品质生活). For many people, living longer increases the risk of dementia(痴呆), disability and degenerative disease(退行性疾病). Furthermore, women tend to live longer than men – worldwide, women account for 55% of the population aged 60+. Among those over 80, women are almost twice as numerous as men. Many of these women are likely to be widowed(守寡), be less educated and had fewer years in the workforce, meaning their access to social security(社会安全性) is greatly reduced.

Moreover, an aging population has visceral societal effects. It puts greater pressure on healthcare, including higher demand for surgery(手术) and hospital care. In turn, this creates a need for more government funding to go towards medical costs, possibly meaning a reduction in funding to other areas, such as education, the arts, and employment. Additionally, an aging population exacerbates(恶化) the demand on pensions, retirement homes and care by younger generations(年轻一代). Aging also has a direct impact on the labour market(劳务市场) and workforce. A longer life means some choose to remain employed, rather than retire. This creates a much smaller job market for the younger generation, whereby they have greater difficulty in finding gainful employment.

While increased longevity (长寿)has its positives, it also presents significant challenges to individuals and society alike. Societal aging can affect family functionality, economic growth and quality of life.

Brainstorming

I started with brainstorming on the negative effects of living longer, and then did some Google searches to clarify and further understand what negative implications there may be. I used journal articles, news sites (The Guardian, CNN and the BBC), medical websites and discussion boards.

I decided to focus on the individual implications in the first paragraph and the effects on society in the second. I then chose to narrow it down to two or three points in each paragraph.

First paragraph:第一段

Firstly, how living longer can have negative impacts on health and wellbeing.

Secondly, how this affects women, as they tend to live longer.

Second paragraph:第二段

Firstly, how an aging and sick population affects society- within the medical association, and then in terms of costs for government.

Secondly, how this affects pensions, retirement homes and their families.

Thirdly, how this affects young people in the workforce.

Key words used for research:调查使用的关键词

Life expectancy

Pension

Workforce
