Many animals are endangered. Some people argue that we should only protect animals that are useful to human. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
As more animals become endangered, some to the point of extinction, arguments arise around the value of animal protection. Some argue that it is only necessary to protect those that are useful to humans. This essay will discuss this viewpoint and offer my own thoughts.
Those who argue solely for the protection of animals that benefit us note that protecting all animals is an expensive use of money. They contend that this money could instead go towards scientific and medical research. Furthermore, they assert that it is a waste of resources. The protection of animals requires a great amount of human involvement, supplies and materials, which could be better used for housing, schooling, and roads. Moreover, they argue that by protecting all animals we add no real value to human life. It is not useful to us to safeguard all animals if they cannot provide us with food, protection, or other advantages.
However, I disagree with this stance. It is humankind‘s moral and ethical responsibility to protect and save all animals. By creating an arbitrary position where animals are judged on their usefulness to us, we fail to consider the myriad ways that animals benefit us – not only as food, but also with their companionship, teaching us compassion and empathy. Additionally, other species should be able to live without justification – animals have every right to their own existence, not purely for exploitation by humans. Further, the endangerment and extinction of animals is completely the fault of humans. Through our destruction of their natural habitats, we have removed their source of food and shelter, in turn disrupting and damaging our own the eco-system.
Humans have undoubtedly caused the death and endangerment of many animal species. It is our responsibility to correct this, for our benefit and theirs.
I started with brainstorming and listing reasons for and against protecting all animals. I also did some research online, reading articles from The Guardian, National Geographic, and the BBC. I also investigated websites and journal articles about animal protection, wildlife protection and extinction issues.

I decided the first paragraph would focus on the reasons for protecting only those animals that are useful to us. As I only had a few reasons for this, I used all the bullet points in the paragraph, expanding on each point.
The second paragraph focused on the reasons against only protecting animals that are useful to us. My opinion is that all animals should be protected, so I discussed this and the reasons why, picking four main points from the list I made:
- Moral and ethical responsibility
- Eco-system damage
- Animals right to live
- Other benefits to humans
