Though there are hundreds of languages spoken around the world, music is said to be the universal language of mankind. I agree with this view, and this essay will give my reasons below.

Though there are some elements of music that may be held as elitist – classical music and opera are often carry connotations of the upper-class and exclusivity – I agree that music is universal. Firstly, music has a way of reaching across national and cultural boundaries. When we hear music from another country, we can still connect to it through the rhythm, pitch and tempo, because we have these same patterns in our spoken language. Though we may not understand the lyrics, we can divine the meaning through the musicality. Furthermore, music connects other nations and cultures. For example, through the Live Aid concerts held in the 1980s, millions of dollars were raised for famine relief funds. Held in the US and UK and broadcast live across the globe, the music had a huge impact on public awareness of famine.

Secondly, music is an emotional language that transcends culture and nationality, connecting us to people of different generations and genders. No matter our age, we can all appreciate a beautiful voice or catchy melody, and we can share this appreciation with other people, even if we have nothing else in common. For instance, The Beatles have had a dramatic and long-lasting impact on popular music. From their early beginnings in the 1960s, through to their influence on the popstars of today, they have retained a prominent place in music, which people from all walks of life can enjoy and share with others.

In conclusion, I believe that music has the unique ability to connect us to people everywhere and to create shared experiences and emotions.

Firstly I considered the argument and decided if I agreed with it or not, then brainstormed reasons as to why I agreed with it. I also read articles on the topic, from The Guardian, The New York Times and Rolling Stone magazine. I also consulted some journal articles on the subject via Google Scholar.

Reasons why I agree:

  • We can understand music even if we don’t understand the lyrics, through the pitch, rhythm, tempo – same patterns present in spoken languages.
  • Learning to play an instrument is the same across the globe – like a common language.
  • Music can raise awareness in ways that spoken language can’t – example Live Aid concert.
  • Music is emotional – don’t need to understand the words to appreciate the melody – example The Beatles.
  • Music is a form of escapism for people everywhere.
  • Music is a way to represent our culture to other cultures and generate understanding.
  • Music encourages us to dance – which we can all do.

I decided to focus on two main reasons – understanding and connecting – for the first paragraph, with an example to support my argument.

Paragraph one:

  • We can understand music even if we don’t understand the lyrics, through the pitch, rhythm, tempo – same patterns present in spoken languages.
  • Music can raise awareness in ways that spoken language can’t – example Live Aid concert.

In the second paragraph I chose to focus on one reason – the emotionality of music and its ability to connect generations – and use an example to support my argument.

Paragraph two:

  • Music is emotional – don’t need to understand the words to appreciate the melody – example The Beatles.

Key words and phrases:

  • Live Aid
  • The Beatles

~End~

Good luck with your IELTS test
