Brainstorming

I started by brainstorming reasons why tourists might visit and locals might not, and then listing ways to encourage locals to visit. I also read articles on the topic from The New York Times, National Geographic and Traveller magazine, and also researched information from tourism websites.

Reasons why:

  • Tourists – new places are existing, whereas tourists may be complacent as they can visit anytime
  • These sites may not be advertised locally
  • Locals may not have time – have to work, have school etc
  • Too expensive for locals

How to encourage locals:

  • Offer discounts to locals
  • Open at times they can attend – use UK museum example
  • Make events – fairs, markets etc
  • Advertise in local newspapers, radio etc
  • Bring exhibits from other places to the community

I decided the first paragraph would focus on the reasons why, and chose two points to focus on:我决定将(主体)第一段的重点放在原因上,并选择了两点具体阐述:Paragraph one:

  • Tourists – new places are existing, whereas tourists may be complacent as they can visit anytime
  • Locals may not have time – have to work, have school etc.

In the second paragraph, I focused on ways to encourage locals, and picked three main ways:在(主体)第二段中,我重点描述了鼓励当地人的方法,并提出了三种主要做法:Paragraph two:

  • Open at times they can attend – use UK museum example
  • Make events – fairs, markets etc
  • Bring exhibits from other places to the community

In many towns and cities, museums and historical sites are popular places to go and learn about history, culture and art. However, the majority of these facilities are visited by tourists, rather than locals. This essay will discuss why this might be, and consider what can done to encourage local people to visit.

For many tourists, learning about the history of a new place is exciting and informative. They make plans, save money and book tickets months in advance for these visits. On the other hand, for locals, a sense of complacency can reduce any real urgency to visit. Therefore, locals tend not to attend, as they know these sites will be there for many years. Moreover, tourists are on holiday, so have the time and resources to spend travelling and attending exhibitions. Conversely, locals have their normal day-to-day responsibilities to attend to, and may find that they do not have the time to sight-see, or that these sites are not open at times that suit them.

One important way to encourage locals to visit is to bring in temporary exhibitions and displays from other parts of the country, and indeed the world. This way, locals will attend as they know these exhibits will not remain there, and they also get to experience different cultures and art. Curators and managers could also create events around these exhibits, like fairs, talks and markets, as another way to encourage locals to attend. Additionally, these sites should consider opening for longer hours, so that locals are able to attend outside of working hours. One museum in the UK found their visitor numbers went up 25% just by opening for two hours longer on Friday evenings.

It is important that museums and historical sites remain open, and we can only their viability by encouraging visitors, both tourists and locals alike.
