范 文

Having a healthy life style is important for each of us, and playing sports is a good way to keep active and fit. Some people believe team sports, like football, basketball and baseball have the most benefit, while others argue that individual sports, like swimming, running and surfing, are better. This essay will discuss both views and give my own opinion.

keep active and fit

Individual sports build and foster mental toughness. They demand we set personal goals, and that we focus and work hard to achieve them. For example, a swimmer may set a goal to swim a length in acertain time. Because they must rely on themselves to achieve this, they build the self discipline required to get up and practise each morning, and to remain focused, even if they suffer setbacks. By doing so, individual sports also help to build one’s confidence – by reaching these personal ambitions, the individual gains a strong sense of accomplishment.

However, I believe that team sports have more far-reaching benefits. Primarily, team sports teach us important social skills, like communicating effectively and building harmonious relationships. For example, a football player learns how to communicate with his teammates when strategising for a game, and to do so in a communal, collaborative environment. Furthermore, team sports help us to make new friends, avoiding the feelings of solitude and loneliness that individual sports can create. These skills go beyond the playing field, helping people to make real connections outside of sport, and providing us with skills we can use in all aspects of life.

strategising for a game

Though there are benefits to all sports, be they individual or team structured, I believe thatsports played with others are better at providing us with skills that can benefit us on both a personal and social level.

Some people think advertising may have positive economic effects. Others think it has negative social effects because individuals are not satisfied with who they are and what they have. Discuss both views and giveyour opinion.

BrainstormI started by brainstorming on the positive economic effects of advertising, and then what the negative social effects might be. I also researched the subject through articles in The New Yorker,Forbes magazine, The Guardian and CNN, and read articles from finance, psychology and advertising websites. I then listed the points.

Positive economic effects

  • Boosts the economy by people spending
  • Creates healthy competition by producers and manufacturers – no monopoly
  • Creates a desire for better and more efficient products – makes money and makes our lives easier
  • Demand for products means more jobs

Negative social effects

  • People never satisfied withwhat they have so keep consuming
  • People keep consuming so they get into debt
  •  Constant comparison to what other people have经常与别人比较
  • Technology changing all the time, so new products soon become old and obsolete
  • Creates waste – bad for the environment
  • People work longer hours to have more money to spend – neglect health, family

Paragraph One

I decided the first paragraph would focus on the positive economic effects, and chose two points to focus on.

  • Boosts the economy by people spending
  • Demand for products means more jobs

Paragraph Two

In the second paragraph, I gave my own opinion and focused on two specific negative social effects of advertising.

  • Creates waste – bad for the environment
  • People work longer hours to have more money to spend – neglect health, family

Key Words and Phrases

As advertising becomes increasingly pervasive 充斥各处的 and invasive 浸袭的 , concerns and questions have arisen regarding the effects it may be having on the economy and on society. Some people believe the economic effects are positive, whereas others argue the social effects of advertising are negative. This essay will discuss both views and offer my own opinion.

Of course, advertising creates a desire in people to spend, and by spending, a nation’s economy is boosted This furthers economic growth 推进经济增长, so companies have more cash to procure capital 筹集资金, improve technology 改善技术, expand and grow. These increase productivity and further stimulate the economy. Furthermore, they are able to spend on infrastructure, which in turn creates more jobs for more workers. This way, more people are able to make a living. It can also create further economic growth – for example, construction of a new highway also entails 使成为必需 other investments, like gas stations, cafes and retail stores 零售商店.

However, I agree that the negative social effects of advertising cannot be ignored, and outweigh the economic positives. Firstly, advertising and the desire it creates in people to spend more and more money means people have to work longer hours in order to buy. This means they spend more time away from their families, which can cause real damage to relationships.Furthermore, they may also neglect their own health, causing illness and more bills. Secondly, by incessantly purchasing products, we create real damage to the environment and our health – many products are not sustainable or recyclable, may be toxic or create heavy air pollution. One study found that the production and use of household goods was responsible for at least 60% of global greenhouse gas emissions
Though advertising creates a demand for products that do help the economy, we cannotafford to ignore 不容忽视 the detrimental impact 有害影响 it has on our society. We must ensure a balance is found.

  • Tourists – new places are existing, whereas tourists may be complacent as they can visit anytime
  • These sites may not be advertised locally
  • Locals may not have time – have to work, have school etc
  • Too expensive for locals

In many towns and cities, museums and historical sites are popular places to go and learn about history, culture and art. However, the majority of these facilities are visited by tourists, rather than locals. This essay will discuss why this might be, and consider what can done to encourage local people to visit.

For many tourists, learning about the history of a new place is exciting and informative. They make plans, save money and book tickets months in advance for these visits. On the other hand, for locals, a sense of complacency can reduce any real urgency to visit. Therefore, locals tend not to attend, as they know these sites will be there for many years. Moreover, tourists are on holiday, so have the time and resources to spend travelling and attending exhibitions. Conversely, locals have their normal day-to-day responsibilities to attend to, and may find that they do not have the time to sight-see, or that these sites are not open at times that suit them.

One important way to encourage locals to visit is to bring in temporary exhibitions and displays from other parts of the country, and indeed the world. This way, locals will attend as they know these exhibits will not remain there, and they also get to experience different cultures and art. Curators and managers could also create events around these exhibits, like fairs, talks and markets, as another way to encourage locals to attend. Additionally, these sites should consider opening for longer hours, so that locals are able to attend outside of working hours. One museum in the UK found their visitor numbers went up 25% just by opening for two hours longer on Friday evenings.

It is important that museums and historical sites remain open, and we can only their viability by encouraging visitors, both tourists and locals alike.

Deciding what career path to take is an important, significant decision, and one that can have life-determining consequences. Historically, most people have chosen a career path early in their lives and kept to it, believing this results in a more satisfying working life. This essay will examine the pros and cons of such a choice, and offer my own opinion.

Choosing our livelihood early does provide stability. For those finishing high school, choosing a degree based on your future vocation engenders a sense of security. This allows students to focus on their goals, without the doubt or lack of certainty that may arise for a person unsure on what career they will pursue. Furthermore, by choosing a job early and keeping to it, a person can expect to be able to climb the career ladder faster than those who have switched careers often. They are more knowledgeable, experienced and have a wider number of contacts within their chosen industry.

However, I believe that by choosing a career path at an early age, people risk making an important decision while they are emotionally immature, not knowing enough about themselves before making such a crucial choice. Therefore, they may find that they complete their tertiary studies only to find that they are no longer interested in this career path. One study found that a staggering 9 out of 10 people aged between 21 and 65 say that they regret their career choices. Moreover, by staying within one career we risk becoming bored, with a lack of variety, challenges and new information. By diversifying our employment, we are more likely to be invigorated by our jobs and feel fulfilled.

Though career stability is important, it is equally essential to consider the ways our lives and indeed, characters, may change as we age, and so too may our career interests.

To understand another culture, we can visit the country, eat the food, and observe their traditions. However, an overwhelming amount of people choose to learn the language of another culture. This essay will consider if learning a language is indeed the best way to know another culture, and offer my own opinion on this discussion.

Clearly, learning the language of another nation helps us to communicate and share our thoughts and beliefs. It also reduces the risk of misunderstanding and misinterpretation, which could otherwise lead to disagreements. By learning a language, we get to know the local people through their own perspective, and gain valuable insights into their lives, traditions and values. Furthermore, by educating ourselves in the language of another, we show a willingness to learn and a respect for others. For example, research shows that locals are more likely to welcome foreigners to their country who speak their language, as it shows they genuinely care and want to be involved.

However, though language is important, I believe there are more effective ways to learn another culture. Firstly, it is especially salient to know their traditions. Traditions are long-held customs that have been passed down from generation to generation, and by learning these, we show a respect for history and we gain a more expansive, nuanced understanding. Moreover, many countries today celebrate their heritage and culture through different forms. We can learn about their culture through the arts – like painting, music or dance – or through their festivals. For instance, in Japan they have the Hanami festival, to celebrate the blooming of the cherry blossom trees. This festival dates back 1000 years, and teaches us many aspects of the Japanese culture.

We should learn another culture’s language, but we should also learn their history and traditions, in order to gain a well-rounded education.

The education of young people is highly prioritized in many countries. However, educating adults who cannot write or read is even more important and governments should spend more money on this. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

The majority of countries in the world provide free education for children. For example in China and Korea, there is primary to secondary school education. These institutions(公共机构 ) are often heavily subsidized(资助) by the government. Despite that(尽管如此), some believe that teaching illiterate(文盲的) adults how to read or write should be prioritized. While I agree that this is crucial, the education of young people must also not be neglected.

Nations like Norway, Finland, and Germany are famous for their free tertiary education(高等教育). This is offered to locals and international students alike, proving that governments value higher education for their citizens. Undeniably, young people require assistance to pursue further academia(学术生涯). Since they are the future workforce, investing into them is practical.

However, if adults do not receive proper education, illiteracy(文盲) will impact the society as a whole. The main issue is unemployment among older people. Employment opportunities are slim(微小的) for those without the basic skill of reading and writing. They often have lower earnings, poorer health and higher rates ofincarceration(监禁). Also, they are more prone to workplace accidents or misuse ofmedication(药物). These factors mayhinder(阻碍) society’s development overall. Therefore, governments should focus more on educating illiterate adults if they hope to encourage economic and social growth. Research shows that there is a direct positive correlation(正相关) between literacy rate and per capita(人均) income in a country. If governments can spend money effectively on improving the country’s literacy, the whole of society may be improved.

In conclusion, I believe that the government’s goal should be to achieve basic literacy for the whole population. In turn, this ensures that people can continue to gain knowledge with help from the internet and other free resources. Governments should allocate money towards improving literacy rates for adults, especially the convicts(罪犯) and unemployed, who have urgent need for it in ourtext-heavy(重视文化的) world.

The table below gives information about the underground railway systems in six cities.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The table above displays statistics(展示统计) of underground railway systems(地铁系统)in major cities across different countries(主要城市). All the systems have millions of passengers per year.

The railway systems with the most passengers(旅客最多) are in London, Paris and Tokyo, which also happen to be (恰巧是)the cities which opened their systems(开放体系) the earliest(最早) in the chart. The London(伦敦) underground railway system is the oldest(最古老) and also thelongest(最长) railway system. It was opened in 1863 and is 394 kilometers long. The Tokyo(东京) underground railway system opened in 1927 and leads the chart (表格中居首)with 1927 million passengers per year.

Conversely(相反), the most recently opened (最近开放)railway systems inKyoto and Los Angeles are much shorter(短的多) and have less passengers(更少的旅客). Kyoto’s underground railway system in particular is only 11 kilometers long and has 45 million passengers per year, barely two percent of Tokyo’s annual railway users.

Another trend(另一个趋势) is cities that are highly populated(人口稠密的)also seem to have more railway passengers(更多的旅客). More commuters may rely on the railway system for transport in these urbanized cities.

In conclusion, the underground railway systems that have been established forthe longest have the most passengers, which are also situated in cities with a high population.

  • the most passengers旅客最多
  • leads the chart表中领先

As international travel has become cheaper, more countries have started to embrace (拥抱)tourism as a staple (主要产品)of their culture and income. Increased tourism has helped expand their economy, globalized (使全球化)cultural traditions, and diversified(使多样化) other practices. Yet it has also introduced significant issues such as environmental concerns and a dangerous dependency on tourism for infrastructure and wealth.

The increase in tourism has helped countries to educate others on their culture and religions(宗教), benefiting both the country by spreading knowledge and the tourist by enriching their life experience. This has helped diversify the cultures we see around the world which helps sustain(维持) tourism for the long-term. Economic growth is another advantage of increased tourism as there is a heightened(提高) need for local products and businesses, and thus an increase in profits for the country in question.

However, increased tourism has also introduced environmental concerns as we see carbon emissions and greenhouse gases increase alongside tourism. With tourism taking an estimated(估计) 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions, there is a significant danger for climate change and global warming. Countries who rely on tourism as their primary source of income have also suffered recently from Covid-19 which has practically shut down(停工) the tourism industry due to the need for lockdowns(封锁) and isolation(隔离). This highlights(突出) the danger of dependency on tourism, as natural disasters or global restrictions can lead to economic ruin(毁坏) if there is no backup plan(备份计划) in place.

Overall, the advantages significantly outweigh the disadvantages of increased tourism as it allows many countries to prosper(繁荣). Local governments need to take into consideration potential environmental concerns and implement(实施) smarter and greener solutions. It is also important for countries to have crisis(危机) plans in place for uncontrollable disasters.

It will be better to have wide use of driverless cars for individuals and society. To what extent do you agree or disagree with the statement?

While the work on creating fully driverless cars is still in progress, some people say that should it become a reality, then driverless cars should be used widely. They assert that this has real benefits for individuals and society. This essay will discuss the pros and cons, and offer my own opinion on this statement.

Those with reservations cite traffic congestion as a real concern. If autonomous cars become popular, we could see a significant increase in the number of cars on the road. People who were unable to drive would have the opportunity to use these cars instead, meaning that the number of vehicles in circulation could rise dramatically. Additionally, there is the potential loss of jobs for many people, should driverless cars become the norm. Uber and taxi drivers, as well as truck drivers transporting goods cross-country, would have their livelihoods severely impacted by such a change. Furthermore, an increase in unemployed citizens will have societal repercussions.

However, I believe there are considerable benefits to autonomous vehicles being widely used. Firstly, there is the human and social benefit, with the potential for lives being saved. An estimated 90% of all road fatalities are attributed to human error. Speeding, drink driving and distractions occur frequently, with 1.3 million people killed worldwide each year in traffic accidents. Removing the human element from driving would reduce accidents and save many lives. Secondly, the majority of driverless cars will be electric, which will have cruical benefits for the environment. Electric vehicle use would reduce the amount of emissions released into the atmosphere, which means a healthier, cleaner environment for people, and much less illness.

Though the reality of autonomous cars is still a way off, the benefits to individuals and society greatly outweigh the negatives and should be considered.

Brainstorming:

Firstly I started brainstorming my own list of pros and cons for wide-use driverless cars. I then researched the topic by reading articles and opinion pieces, from The Guardian, CNN and The New York Times. I also consulted traffic websites, vehicle websites and statistics on road fatalities.

Cons:

  • Increase of vehicles affects congestion
  • Risk of criminal hacking / computer crashes or glitches
  • Loss of jobs – taxi, Uber, truck drivers
  • Expenses – could initially be very expensive to purchase
  • People that like to drive- may not be able to should manually driven cars stop being made

Pros:

  • Lives saved – removes the risk of human error, so significant drop in crashes.
  • Economic benefits — cost to taxpayers for road crashes would decrease if number of crashes decreases
  • People who can’t drive would have accessibility
  • Better for the environment – less emissions with electric vehicles
  • People who don’t like driving can travel without having to drive
  • Quicker commute times – computers sense if other vehicles too close, reduces traffic jams and congestion

After listing the pros and cons, I decided I was pro-driverless cars. I decided the first paragraph would focus on the negatives, and chose two points to focus on.

Paragraph one:

  • Increase of vehicles affects congestion
  • Loss of jobs – taxi, Uber, truck drivers

The second paragraph would state my opinion and focus on the positives. Again I chose two points to develop, and used statistics to back this up.

Paragraph two:

  • Lives saved – removes the risk of human error, so significant drop in crashes – use statistics
  • Better for the environment – less emissions with electric vehicles

Key words/phrases:

  • Driverless cars
  • pros and cons of autonomous cars自动驾驶汽车的利弊
  • Tesla
  • Google driverless car
